Senator Butler Statement On The Need For Meaningful And Humanitarian Immigration Reform

Washington D.C.—Today, Senator Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) released the following statement on the necessity of humanitarian immigration reform that protects vulnerable populations:

I am proud to represent California, home to the largest number of immigrants in the United States. One of the first bills I co-sponsored as a U.S. Senator was the Fair Day for Kids in Court Act – a bill to provide counsel for children in immigration court.

As a Senator from a border state and a mom, I will continue to work to improve our immigration system, especially for children. Any asylum policy changes must be paired with creating pathways to citizenship for long-term residents, including those who came to this country as children.

Immigrants make California great. Over a quarter of Californians are immigrants, while another quarter are native-born citizens with at least one immigrant parent. I am excited to serve on the relevant Senate committees that work to address our outdated immigration system.
