Butler, Padilla Introduce Bill to Rename San Francisco Federal Building After Late Senator Dianne Feinstein

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senators Laphonza Butler and Alex Padilla (both D-Calif.) introduced a bill to rename San Francisco’s 50 United Nations Plaza Federal Building as the “Senator Dianne Feinstein Federal Building,” after the late California Senator and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein.

The six-story, 350,000-square-foot building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is home to the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) regional headquarters for the Pacific Rim Region. It was constructed in 1936 and renovated in 2013 to upgrade building systems, restore historically significant interiors and the central courtyard, and redesign office workspace. It is also LEED Platinum Certified.

“Senator Feinstein worked tirelessly for the people of California. Renaming the 50 United Nations Plaza Federal Building in her name honors the extraordinary legacy she left behind,” said Senator Butler.

“Senator Feinstein was a relentless advocate for the people of California, dedicating her career to serving the Golden State and her beloved hometown of San Francisco,” said Senator Padilla. “Renaming a federal building at the heart of the San Francisco Civic Center in her honor — just steps away from where she served as the first female mayor of San Francisco — commemorates her legacy of leading with strength and shattering barriers, a legacy that will inspire generations of Californians to come.”

“Dianne Feinstein was a trailblazer, who dedicated her life to public service, fiercely believed in and fought for democratic values, and shattered glass ceilings,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed. “While she was deeply committed to serving our state and country, San Francisco is where she was born and raised, and where her career began. Naming this building after her will ensure that her memory lives on forevermore in the City that she loved and called home.”
