Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) released the below statement following her vote on the Senate border security bill:
“Today, I voted against the stand-alone border security legislation. In many key areas, it omits components critical to advancing the values to which I have dedicated my entire career. On its own, it is a measure that failed to provide comprehensive solutions for critical communities—DACA recipients, farmworkers, and long-term U.S. residents. While there are elements of this bill I support, including funding for our border communities and efforts to prevent the flow of fentanyl, this measure simply misses the mark.
“There is more work to be done to address the root causes behind the breakdowns at the Southern border, and I am resolute in working to find solutions that protect our border, strengthen our national security, and honor the value of human dignity.”
