This week, during a congressional delegation trip to Mexico, Senator Butler met with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, and key Mexican government officials to address critical issues related to the Tijuana River crisis. During the visit, Senator Butler raised the issue of Tijuana River sewage pollution directly with President López Obrador, President-elect Sheinbaum, and officials from the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), urging them to address this environmental and public health crisis. Senator Butler pressed for answers about why there are currently 45 million gallons of wastewater flowing into the United States through the Tijuana River each day, a number significantly higher than dry season flows in prior years.
Senator Butler also emphasized the need to work collaboratively to resolve this crisis and to continue building partnerships with the Mexican government to improve infrastructure in the city of Tijuana and complete the replacement of the San Antonio de los Buenos treatment plant. Senator Butler received assurances from both President López Obrador and President-elect Sheinbaum that construction of the San Antonio de los Buenos facility would be completed this year, and that infrastructure projects meant to stop cross-border pollution would remain a priority for both the current and incoming administrations.
